Last week, I had a chance to catch up with the Hatter family at their beautiful colonial home in Brookfield Place. It was great to find out all of the amazing things going on with their family!
Q: How long have you lived inColumbus?
A: John and I both grew up in Columbus and moved away after college. We returned to Columbus in August 1999 and have been here as “adults” since!
Q: How many children do you have? What are their ages? Where do they attend school?
A: We have 3 children: Will (age 10), Paige (age 6) and a baby boy due June 30, 2012. Will and Paige both attend school at St. Bartholomew Catholic School inColumbus.
Q: What made you decide to build a home with Spoon Construction?
A: I have known Robyn since our high school days at Columbus North. After growing out of our first house and looking at tons of houses for sale inColumbus, we couldn’t find exactly the right one. About that time (2007), Robyn and Joel were working on plans forBrookfield Place. We took a visit, saw the (then) model under construction, and realized we loved the idea of creating our home from the ground up. We were able to build a house that exactly fit our needs and the needs of our growing family, plus invest money in the features that were important to us. The entire Spoon Construction team made the process very easy – from planning and blueprints to making final finishing selections for our home. The end result is truly our dream home…and it was affordable too!
Q: What is your favorite feature of your home?
A: John’s favorite feature is the floor to ceiling built in bookcase in our front entryway. We opted for a reading “nook” that he uses a lot when he wants to read. Mine is a three way tie between the combined kitchen/family room space, the mudroom cubbies and the 2nd floor storage room (our “unfinished basement). The kids LOVE the finished 3rd floor playroom and I love that the toys have somewhere to live besides the family room!
Q: What was your favorite part of the process of building your home?
A: We both enjoyed aspects of the entire process. Spoon Construction was very collaborative – we had ideas we shared with the team, they made recommendations and showed us features in other homes that were complete to give us a good picture of what we would be getting. We both appreciate the craftsmanship and pride that goes into the homes too – from the framing crew (who we now know by name, since we’ve watched all the other houses being built around us) to the finishing crew of woodworkers and painters, each subcontractor clearly takes pride in his or her work. Their attention to detail really shows, even four years later, when visitors come to our home and comment on some of the careful details.
Q: What special things are going on in the life of your family right now?
A: Besides our baby boy arriving this summer, we are a busy bunch. In addition to my full-time job at Columbus Parks & Recreation Department as their Marketing/PR Coordinator, I also run my own home-based business as a Group Leader for Willow House. I get to “party” and make money, plus have had the opportunity to decorate our home with many of the Willow House Style for Home products (shameless plug to check them out at http://katiahatter.willowhouse.com or “like” my Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/khwillowhouse). In addition to his full-time job as the Executive Director for Human Resources at Ivy Tech Community College here in Columbus, John is running for Congress! He is seeking the Republican nomination for the sixth Congressional district (currently held by Rep. Mike Pence) and we are seeing less and less of him as he prepares for the primary election on May 8. He’s on the ballot and we’d appreciate your vote! You can learn more about John’s campaign at http://www.hatterforcongress.com or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/hatterforcongress. Of course, our kids keep us busy with their activities – Will is an avid swimmer with Donner Swim Club and Paige is a Daisy Scout and active Kindergartener.
